Additional Templates Packs Available

Back on August we released the “Custom Templates” feature that allows users to create their own re-deployable templates or to mirror a VPS.

The feature is limited to one free template per account, but now users are able purchase additional template (in packs of 5) to build their own library of deployable images.

The price is $20 per 5 template pack.

To order, please access “Manage Custom Templates” under Manage VPS and the option to purchase the packs will be visible on the bottom left corner of the page.

  1. If I have more than 1 VPS, can the 5 template pack be shared between all of them. For example, I’d like to create a 3 templates based on VPS-A, another 2 templates based on VPS-B, and 3 more based on VPS-C, will that work (assuming I’m also using the 1 free template that comes with each VPS)? Further, if I have a fourth VPS… let’s call it VPS-D… will those 8 custom templates be available as an image to use on VPS-D?

  2. If I have more than 1 VPS, can the 5 template pack be shared between all of my servers? For example, I’d like to create 3 templates based on VPS-A, another 2 templates based on VPS-B, and 3 more based on VPS-C, will that be allowed (assuming I’m also using the 1 free template that comes with each VPS by default)?

Further, if I have a fourth VPS… let’s call it VPS-D… will those 8 custom templates I created from VPS A, B, and C be available as an image to use on VPS-D as well?

Finally, what happens if I stop hosting with VPS.net temporarily? Will I still be able to keep those 5 templates around for future use (whenever I need a server with you guys again) as long as I keep paying the $20 monthly fee?

  3. Thanks for answering my questions, NullMind. That’s good to know! Just to follow up on my last question though… is it possible to keep my templates around, as long as I keep paying the $20 monthly fee, even if I don’t have any active VPS nodes anymore? Say for example I want to suspend my websites for a year for whatever reason and use the templates as a way to keep a backup of my sites until I’m ready to relaunch them again in the future, is that allowed?

I’m just curious because as far as I can tell, there’s no way for customers to be able to download a copy of a backup off-site (and by backup I mean a true bootable, image of our VPS rather than a copy of the files on our VPS). So, in essence, your template system is the only way for us to keep a backup of our servers in case we need to stop hosting with you for a while.

By comparison, we can make copies of images of our VPS nodes on Linode by using their bootable Finnix image, and simply copying the entire contents of our disk partitions over the network once we have that mounted properly. (I have no affiliation with Linode whatsoever, and I’m not endorsing their products over VPS.net in any way. In fact, their real backup system isn’t even functional yet, and the example I gave above is the only way you can copy your system off-site. Not very elegant, but the images are bootable.)
