Default New/Updated CentOS 5.4 Templates
We have replaced most of all CentOS 5.2 templates with 5.4 versions, we have also removed the old "CentOS Cloud Optimized" images and replaced them with our new "CentOS Optimized / Hardened" library, also based on CentOS 5.4

The list of new & updated templates are as follows:
  • CentOS 5.4 x64
  • CentOS 5.4 x64 Apache
  • CentOS 5.4 x64 HAProxy
  • CentOS 5.4 x64 LAMP
  • CentOS 5.4 x64 MYSQL
  • CentOS 5.4 x64 Postfix
  • CentOS 5.4 x64 Shoutcast
  • CentOS 5.4 x64 Varnish
  • CentOS 5.4 x64 Optimized
  • CentOS 5.4 x64 Optimized and Hardened
  • CentOS 5.4 x64 Optimized and Hardened LAMP
  • CentOS 5.4 x64 Optimized and Hardened LLMP
  • CentOS 5.4 x64 Optimized and Hardened LNMP
  • CentOS 5.4 x64 Optimized and Hardened MYSQL

Additional templates such as 5.4 cPanel and Elastic Hardened will be coming next week, we are also preparing Wiki pages with information on each template.

Can you clarify what the Hardened aspect refers to? What exactly comes installed on CentOS 5.4 x64 Optimized and Hardened?

Also noticed that fail2ban has disappeared and system utils such as locate have gone? Both were in the old image?

The optimized portion means the images have been stripped of all non essential packages and running tasks to allow them to run on the minimum setup possible

The hardened means they have been firewalled and known exploitable holes have been plugged

We have not incorporated more stringent rules and packages because they endup being too much for most users and we where left with allot of support requests from people who did not know how to lessen the security measures on their images.

In the future we will add more packages with fail2ban and other packages liek it but they will be clearly marked as such

They appear to be much more compact. The old images had many, many packages installed that just didn't need to be there. These new images look tight with only the basics installed. Very nice!

Weeell, I might want to take it back. I still see things like anacron, gpm, gamin, bluetooth, cups, kudzu.
