I was thinking that you could treat a Product Key as a digital download.

Unfortunatelly, most shopping carts, define digital goods as single files but not unique to each client/sale.

So I could have my product keys as text files but then I could not stock them individually. On every sale, all of the clients would get the same text file...

These systems, are for mp3 / pdf etc.

I have way too many projects right now so I wouldn't be able to make this in a suitable time frame, but this does sound like an excellent idea for a product. If you do find something eventually would you mind reporting back here? If you don't I might give it a go, I definitely think there's a market for such a product, I'd be surprised if it doesn't exist already though... (self-hosted, not like shareit).

Yes, it is really funny that there is no support for delivering product keys on any of the major shopping carts.

Even cs-cart does not have it, not even a community pluggin.
They are into giving me a quote though. I most certainly do not go with them however because the seem not to understand such a simple business logic... :S

The thing is I do not have the time to reinvent the wheel myself too...

Anthony, selling software is a really serious business. I cannot go with an alpha plugin over drupal... I am looking for a proven and solid solution. Thanks for the heads-up though

thats understandable, thats why i suggested drupal+ubercart+the module referenced above

ubercart is mostly plug and play, its just the setup thats the trick as with any self hosted solution

PS its beta and to be honest alpha and beta for the most part dont have consistent meaning over at drupal, it very much depends on the developer - the way i read it was that he was reluctant to change to release ready because he had no known working production sites or at least any that told him

or find a popular well tested system like say magento or otherwise and write the code from scratch.

if you want a job done right...
