Is it possible to communicate via private ip's between clouds? I'm guessing no, but worth a shot

true, you'd need an external IP to do that.

can I just ask, what are the benefits of adding new IPs, especially the internal ones. ARE there any benefits? Should we worry about that or just use the single, assigned IP?

Just curious to see what other people say/prefer...

there is a few situations where you should look into getting a dedicated IP:

1) Running multible sites with the need for SSL certificates, like ecommerce or websites with sensitive info or transactional data flowing around. At VPS.NET we give you free and unlimited SSL certificates from COMODO, and that is why most of our unique IP's get assigned

2) You may also want to run your own name servers (though the DNS admin in VPS.NET is what most use), and that requires at least 2 IP's. It is not good practice, however, to have both your NS1 and NS2 residing in the same location, so you'd need at least two nodes (one in UK and one in US) to do this properly. Again, its not needed, but prefered to some.

3) Others claim that unique IP's is good for SEO - this discussion easily becomes religious, as any other Search Engine Optimization discussion, but it's a reason none the less.

You'll find other reasons out there, especially related to mass-mailing, IRC etc - but those are not relevant to VPS.NET

This caught my eye. Would it not be relevant because it would be better for mass-malling or IRC to set up a VPS just for that use or did I miss something in the TOS?

Because we do not like Mass-Mailers (spam) or IRC here at VPS.NET :)

I plan to set up multiple ecommerce sites using CMS with mysql. I have used hosting in the past where the db was on a separate server from the content site. Does a private IP meet this desired function? Doesn't seem like you would want it public.

Can't SSL certs be issued for a single IP? I don't follow why another IP would be required/needed.

Are not all IP's issued/used considered dedicated?

Reason for edit: add dedicated server question

with private IP's

i assume no one outside of your account can access them

and that private ip communication (say between 2 nodes/vps') doesnt use your bandwith pool?

Private IPs are basically used for more direct inter-communication between your servers on the same cloud network.

Useful if you run load balancing, external MySQL, clustering, etc

i knew that, i wasnt asking about that

i was asking that if we have private IP's i assume that someone else with a different account cannot access one of my vps via private IP address

and then my other question was are we charged bandwith for private ip traffic (ie between vps')

Inside there you will find your IP Pool manager, with the ability to add or remove ip's, we are adding a top table identifying each of those elements, but you basically get your IP Address, Netmask and Gateway .. it's then your responsibility then to add the IP to your VPS of choice.
Enjoy :)

how do i setup/assign an internal IP i have created, to a particular vps? all of this is new to me, ideally i'd want to be able to access one vps's files from the other, sort of like a network share? is that how it works?

with a private ip, can i access one vps from another, e.g. opening a file descriptor on another vps and reading from/writing to it etc, or do i have to setup a network share?

also, how does one go about setting up a private ip for a given vps? i don't see (m)any tutorials out there, so I thought I'd ask here.
