Hi All :)

We've implemented the ability to upgrade nodes without rebuilding the disk. Basically, now you can elect to postpone the upgrade of your disk for a later time (or indefinitely). We also put the feature in to schedule the disk upgrade for any time you wish.

You will see this feature in "Edit VPS" as well as a "Deploy" link next to storage in the General VPS Overview.

Once you delay storage upgrades one time, it'll continue not to upgrade storage until you uncheck this option.

If you have any questions concerning this, please let us know! :)

Fantastic news, Nick!
How long does the upgrade take, and is there any downtime while this happens?

I upgraded from 2 to 6 nodes in 30 seconds.

There is downtime, it basically only needs to reboot your server.

On-the-fly upgrades are another milestone of ours, we're not there yet - but it's definitely "on the list". :)

This is a great feature for us - really one of my favorite so far :)

For now, just a reboot - and that will change as well, as we have developed a method that will allow ram/cpu to be added to live servers. More on that later...

Even more interesting though; the odd guys in Carlos' lab claim to have found a way for us - in the distant future - to upgrade/resize disks without rebooting. More on that way later.

Carlos is a wizard. I'm calling it here and now. Only sorcery could produce these magical updates.

Sounds good, I've experimented with iSCSI + ext3 live resizing and it would definitely be slick if you guys manage to add this. Good job!

While simple to explain, and not something fancy or easy to market... I think this is one of the best features to come to VPS.net. :)

And shouldn't this help take some load off the SANs too? Since I imagine that many resize operations don't actually need instant access to increased storage.

I believe this will take a bit of load off of the SANs, but it likely won't be enough to matter, however, this will clear up the boot queue - as not so many rebuilds will be hogging the slots.

Which is a big net win for everybody, even if they never use the feature. Excellent :)
