How many nodes is your VPS? Just out of curiosity... -

You should read that article a little more thoroughly. OpenSSH was not backdoored... "It is believed that the attackers gained access using compromised user credentials, and then escalated their privileges to root." An old or compromised account was used to gain entry to the server.
I would do some searching around and look into using SSH keys which significantly hardens your server and educates your users. All of my clients who need access to the server via SSH are required to use keys and no password authentication is used. It significantly reduces the stress and headache of being the administrator.
Good luck! -

VPS.net has had some experience with DDOS attacks and they do filter them, or have at least in the past. I've found that using CloudFlare is an excellent way to mitigate potential threats long before the issue hits your vps. I've encouraged or moved almost all of my clients to it and my experience with VPS.net has been stellar!
With an outstanding host for my vps and an excellent first line of defense with a third party, mine and my users experiences have taken new heights. The services are essentially non-competitive so its worth a look. -

Just curious,
Did you ever get this issue fixed? Also, did you ever find out what was causing the issue? Things like these are good to know if in the event that they ever happen to me.
Thanks! -

Well, luckily I am rsyncing customer sites and I have various other backup solutions, I just wanted to have the "catastrophe" backup solution of being able to roll the whole server back a day etc. I think you're right in the long run though. Oh well...
