Clicking the ‘Reboot’ button from the Cloud+ console sends a command to the management processes of your virtual machine, to reboot that same machine.

Rather than sending the command to some process listening inside your installed operating system, the underlying mechanism controlling virtual machines in Cloud+ estate is invoked, which in turn requests that the virtual machine be restarted.

The reboot attempt is a ‘nice’ attempt against your machine, meaning the OS will be instructed to calmly sync and reboot, rather than having its process (and kernel) abruptly terminated by the underlying mechanism.

You can visualise the received signals from inside your OS, here’s an example where we look for specific entries around the time we sent our signal from the Cloud+ console:
