Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the French co-founder of the modern Olympic Games, designed the traditional symbol in 1912. The colors are even more symbolic than the rings, according to Coubertin. The blue, yellow, black, green, and red on top of the white background represent all of the colors of the countries participating in the games from around the world. Coubertin stated that the colored rings are “truly an international symbol”.
The Olympic rings have held strong for over 100 years. During every Olympic games, both summer or winter, we can count on seeing that pure white flag and the vibrant colored rings. There is no doubt that there is unrest in this world, but the Olympics bring a sense of much-needed unity.
Just as the Olympics bring peace into our lives, so does the Christmas season. This time of year is perfect to experience a little more peace, love, and happiness. As we forget about ourselves for the next 5 days, we can realize how much we value our relationships with the ones we love.
